Russia and China are intensifying their cooperation on disinformation and other hybrid operations targeting democratic countries in our region. AMO’s China team, together with MP Helena Langšádlová, organized a round table at the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, focused on the convergence of Chinese and Russian propaganda. Speakers included Helena Langšádlová, Ivana Karásková, Pavel Havlíček, and Michael Romancov.
China team lead Ivana Karásková noted in her remarks that “while China was historically a newcomer to disinformation, it has rapidly adopted the methods Russia previously used in our region. Its use of TikTok and AI is quickly pushing it to the forefront as a disinformation actor.”
AMO analyst Pavel Havlíček highlighted the broader security dimension of Russian activity: “Unlike China, Vladimir Putin’s imperial regime is increasingly willing to engage in open confrontation with the West — including physical destruction, assassinations, and acts of military sabotage. But it hasn’t abandoned information operations either, deploying a wide range of tools and actors to obscure original sources and manipulate the public sphere. Democratic states must learn to respond to these operations effectively and raise the cost for the aggressor.“
The discussion focused on the specific tools and mechanisms through which Russia and China coordinate their information operations. Experts described the use of both state and non-state actors, the spread of disinformation, information laundering, and the targeted manipulation of European audiences through social media and modern technologies including artificial intelligence.
