On February 17, the Association for International Affairs (AMO) hosted an expert roundtable on the EU’s Global Gateway Initiative and its potential for the Czech Republic. Bringing together representatives from diplomacy, industry, and academia, the discussion explored how Czech stakeholders can engage in this strategic EU project. The roundtable was part of the MapInfluenCE project, which examines the influence of global powers in Central Europe. A detailed MapInfluenCE paper by Dominika Urhová on this topic will be published soon.

What is Global Gateway?

Launched in 2021, Global Gateway aims to enhance international cooperation in areas such as sustainable infrastructure, digital connectivity, and climate action. It serves as the EU’s response to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), providing a competitive alternative while promoting transparency and sustainability. With the appointment of Jozef Síkela as the new European Commissioner for International Partnerships, fresh opportunities arise for the Czech Republic to strengthen its role in this initiative.

Why does this matter for the Czech Republic?

Engagement in Global Gateway could bring significant benefits to the Czech Republic. Strengthening economic diplomacy would help Czech businesses connect to international projects and expand their global presence. Active participation in EU-led infrastructure and connectivity projects could increase Czech involvement in strategic regions. The initiative also provides an opportunity to build stronger ties with the Global South, enhancing the Czech Republic’s influence within the EU’s foreign policy framework.

Key Discussion Points

The roundtable highlighted critical challenges and opportunities in implementing Global Gateway. Effective coordination between the EU, G7, and partner countries will be essential for ensuring the initiative’s success. Transparency and long-term sustainability of projects remain key concerns that need to be addressed. Building strong and lasting partnerships with emerging economies will determine how well the Czech Republic can integrate into this strategic framework.

With increasing geopolitical competition in global infrastructure investments, the Czech Republic has an opportunity to align with the EU’s strategic goals while expanding its economic reach. The event at AMO brought together key stakeholders to discuss opportunities and explore ways for future Czech engagement in Global Gateway.
